Driving home from work this week I decided to take the back road through the farmland. As I drove along I caught out of the corner of my eye a box with something yellow sticking out so I put the car in reverse and pulled up to have a look. There, on the side of the road, was a box marked ‘FREE’ and in it was a big yellow squash! Never one to turn down a free item I brought it home with the intention to make it into a nice soup. The problem is I don’t know what kind of squash it is! It actually resembles more of a zucchini except the skin is hard and nubby where a zucchini is soft and smooth (yes, there are yellow zucchini, news to me)! My squash is large so I think its fully grown and it looks like it came off a vine that had branched off.
It also has an interesting green spot on its bottom!
It’s really is perfect so at this point I don’t have the heart to cut it up so I think I will keep it on the kitchen table as a conversation piece and by the way I felt guilty just taking it so I threw a toonie in the box before driving away!
It could be a banana or crooked neck squash. It may even be an simple, overgrown, yellow zucchini.
